The sample for analysis is simply enclosed in a glass capillary tube and then brought to its melting point under strictly controlled time and temperature parameters. The melting point of the sample is observed via an ergonomically designed viewing arm with a 40mm diameter lens (magnification 8X), which is removable and has an adjustable focus.
Four distinct phases are usually observed upon sample melting, with an initial darkening, shrivelling, or sintering caused by loss of solvent or crystallisation.
This is followed by the first signs of liquid formation with the formation of a meniscus and then the clear liquid; all easily observable.
With materials in a high state of purity, the liquid may appear without previous changes and above 300°C some materials may sublime rather than melt. Generally, the melting range will be within 1°C, but this will be dependent of sample purity, with it being possible to readily monitor and record all stages.
The Electrothermal 1A9000’s microprocessor provides a fast, controlled, warm-up and accurate temperature control with a ±0.1°C resolution. There is a simple intuitive membrane keypad with simple menus and push button controls that are located to ensure melting points can be recorded by the operator, while they are still viewing the sample.
Samples in three different capillary tubes may be viewed at the same time. Oven temperature range on the Electrothermal 1A9000 is from ambient to 400°C, ideal for a wide range of samples.
The IA9200 and IA9300 Electrothermal melting point apparatus models offer the option of storing 500 to 1000 melting point determinations and can be connected to a printer for easy downloading.
