£5.9bn for science, says Chancellor

Chancellor George Osborne has today used his Autumn Statement to allocate £5.9 billion of capital for science research facilities in the UK.
As part of the announcement individual research projects and laboratories within the UK will share up to £3 billion worth of funding support.
£235 million will be invested in the Sir Henry Royce Institute for advanced materials which will be located at the University of Manchester and linked to ’satellite centres’ at Leeds, Liverpool, Sheffield, Cambridge, Oxford and Imperial College London.
Included in the £5.9 billion allocation is a £60 million investment to extend the capabilities of the National Nuclear Users Facility - which is designed to support research across the full nuclear lifecycle.
Meanwhile, the Chancellor also announced an additional £2 billion for the NHS per year, and a further £1.2 billion for new GP services.
