Michael Mirro, a Fort Wayne cardiologist, has joined the Health Informatics programme advisory board with the Indiana University School of Informatics
Michael Mirro will be among more than 30 experts who advise the school on its strategic direction, curriculum, research and advancement.
The board includes representatives from a broad spectrum of the health-care community, including government, research, medicine, information technology and medical device manufacturers.
"Dr Mirro is a recognised physician and leader in the health-care community and he brings great insight to our board," School of Informatics dean Michael Dunn.
"Dr Mirro was very helpful to us when our school was started five years ago, and it is good to have him as part of our health informatics programme." Mirro is medical director of the Clinical Research Center at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.
He also holds an appointment as clinical professor of medicine with the IU School of Medicine.
A trustee of the American College of Cardiology, Mirro has been a principal investigator of clinical trials testing medical devices and pharmaceuticals.
He also has developed a community-based summer research program for medical, law and engineering students in the Fort Wayne area.
Mirro, who has published several articles, book chapters and abstracts for professional journals, has participated in medical missions to El Salvador and Moldova in eastern Europe.
The cardiologist received a Sagamore of the Wabash award from former Indiana governor Frank O'Bannon and has received awards for community service and leadership from Rotary International and Junior Achievement.
He received an honorary doctor of science degree from IU in 2003.
