Statement by Bio-Rad Laboratories regarding the confirmed discovery of BSE ('mad cow disease') in the United States: 24 December 2003
Bio-Rad Laboratories has received a number of inquiries regarding the diagnosis of a presumptive positive case of BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy or mad cow disease) in the United States and today issued the following statement: "The control of mad cow disease is an important issue and the USDA has taken action to identify and report this case.
"We understand that the USDA is moving forward to evaluate the situation.
"Bio-Rad's BSE test is the most widely used screening method in the world.
"Independent studies have shown that it is the most sensitive and effective rapid screening method for detecting mad cow disease.
"The company is prepared to provide assistance in addressing this issue in the USA should the need arise."
