Anton Paar has published an application report on the use of its RapidOxy in measuring the stability of lubricating greases.
The report describes the determination of the oxidation stability of 11 grease samples - comparing RapidOxy results at 160°C with results using method ASTM D942 at 99°C after 100 h and 400 h oxidation time.
Both test methods determine resistance of a lubricating grease to oxidation when stored statically in an oxygen atmosphere in a sealed system at an elevated temperature.
Like ASTM D942, RapidOxy may be used for quality control to indicate batch-to-batch uniformity.
It predicts neither the stability of greases under dynamic service conditions, nor the stability of greases stored in containers for long periods, nor the stability of films of greases on bearings and motor parts.
It should be used to estimate the relative oxidation resistance of different grease types.
