Anton Paar has published an Application Note on the use of its PNR 12 penotrometer in measuring the consistency of white petrolatum.
The PNR 12 automatically measures the resistance a material provides to being pierced by a specifically shaped test body. The harder the test material, the more pointed and needle-like the test body should be. The penetrometer is used for consistency and plasticity determination of pasty, creamy, semi-solid or highly viscous samples.
The application report gives an example on how to measure white petrolatum and describes the measurement by penetration method for microcrystalline wax, white petrolatum and carboxymethylcellulose sodium paste.
