Susan Murphy, of Trafford Park Bakery, Manchester, has been awarded the prestigious title of Oxoid Laboratory Technician of the Year 2005/2006
The judges of the Oxoid Food Awards were impressed by the dedication and initiative shown by Susan Murphy in her work as Laboratory Technician at Northern Foods Trafford Park Bakery in Manchester, UK.
Murphy's work in environmental monitoring in the factory setting has been commended by awarding her the first prize of £1000 and a trip to the 2007 International Association of Food Protection Meeting in the USA.
Murphy worked closely with the hygiene department to take a proactive stance in the investigation of potential areas of contamination during production.
Her review of existing systems and presentation of results highlighting problematic areas as well as recommendations put forward, agreed and implemented, all led to improvements in environmental hygiene and closer working relations with other departments.
"We are delighted to award Susan the title of Oxoid Laboratory Technician of the Year said Cheryl Mooney, food and industrial applications manager at Oxoid and chairman of the judges.
"We were all impressed by her practical and proactive application of her microbiology knowledge to improve standards of food hygiene and safety".
