David Wise, professor of computer science at the Indiana University School of Informatics, is the recipient of the 2007 outstanding contribution award from the Association for Computing Machinery
Wise led the creation of the Federated Computing Research Conference - a co-location of many flagship meetings - to improve communication among researchers in different computer science, engineering and related fields.
He also helped advance the usability and content of ACM's digital library by creating its subscription and copyright policy, and advocating for early inclusion of newsletters and conference proceedings for ACM's special interests group.
Wise also chaired its SIG on programming languages and served as the organisation's vice president and secretary-treasurer.
In 2004, Wise was named an ACM fellow both for this leadership and contributions to functional programming.
The IU professor's research interests include applicative programming, multiprocessing architectures and algorithms.
He has secured significant funding from the US National Science Foundation to support the high-performance computing needs of IU researchers; in particular, a scientific portal that provides a gateway to the TeraGrid, used by large numbers of collaborating scientists around the USA.
A senior member of the school's department of computer science, Wise has active teaching responsibilities at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.
Wise, who earned a master's and doctoral degrees in computer science at the University of Wisconsin, will be honored at the annual ACM awards banquet on 9 June 2007 in San Diego, Calif.
The ACM is an educational and scientific society involving the world's computing educators, researchers and professionals to inspire dialogue, share resources and address the field's challenges.
