Technology refresh upgrades existing pathology systems, installed in the early 1990s, and ensures that trusts have the updated systems to meet the demands of a modern pathology service
iSoft has won contracts totalling £1m for a technology refresh of laboratory information systems at nine NHS trusts in Wales.
The deal includes iSoft's latest i.Laboratory TP application providing an InterSystems Cache environment for better performance and greater resilience.
It also ensures that all NHS trusts in Wales are running the same version of i.Laboratory TP as two other trusts upgraded earlier this year.
iSoft will migrate the nine trusts to new IBM servers and provide ongoing support.
The overall deal was negotiated by Informing Healthcare, providing economies of scale and substantial discounts, but the contracts are with each individual trust.
Informing Healthcare is the Welsh Assembly government programme set up to improve patient care through better use of information and IT.
The nine NHS trusts are: Bro Morgannwg, Conwy and Denbighshire, Cardiff and Vale, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, North Glamorgan, North West Wales, Pembrokeshire and Derwen, and Pontypridd and Rhondda.
The two trusts that upgraded earlier this year are North East Wales and Gwent Healthcare.
iSoft has 150 customers in the UK for laboratory information systems, which it says give it a 65% share of the UK market.
