940-LC can be used both as an analytical HPLC and for scaling-up flows to work with larger preparative scale columns to isolate, purify and collect moderate quantities of components of interest
Varian has announced the introduction of its 940-LC liquid chromatograph, a dedicated analytical to semi-preparative (semi-prep) system.
Semi-preparative HPLC is typically used in pharmaceutical, food and agriculture, and academic research laboratories as well as in laboratories studying or refining natural products and specialty chemicals.
The Varian 940-LC saves time and valuable sample material by allowing chromatographers to optimise their separations and collect purified components on the same instrument.
Delivering flow rates of 0.025ml/min up to 200ml/min, the 940-LC is suitable for use with both 4.6mm ID analytical columns and, following a linear scale-up, 2inch semi-preparative columns.
Users can maintain the separation and resolution of the smaller column while significantly increasing the mass of purified material.
Offering analytical and semi-prep capabilities in a single instrument reduces the expense, maintenance, and complexity of employing separate systems.
The 940-LC automates the transition from analytical to semi-preparative flow rates without the need to change plumbing or configurations, reducing the possibility of errors and subsequent losses of potentially precious materials.
"The 940-LC is a bridge between Varian's analytical HPLC offerings and the larger prep to process scale LC products that we offer for pharmaceutical and life science laboratories," said Martin O'Donoghue, senior vice president, scientific instruments, Varian.
"Together with our range of analytical and preparative columns, the 940-LC greatly simplifies and accelerates the task of developing a separation, and purifying valuable sample components".
John Mills, vice president, marketing, added: "Reaching across the breadth of Varian's product lines, the 940-LC links our chromatography offering to our information rich detection products.
"Semi-prep LC can be used to purify compounds of interest for further analysis by MS and NMR."
