Lab21 Environmental (UK), a provider of environmental monitoring services, is helping the Chinese government to provide safe drinking water following the earthquake in Sichuan province
Since the earthquake a number of quake lakes have formed, many of which have high levels of arsenic and lead, making the water unsafe to drink.
Lab21 has provided a number of portable monitors to help the Chinese authorities assess the quality of the drinking water.
The company has so far supplied an extra 16 PDV6000plus portable monitors to the State Environmental Protection Department to add to the 60 already in the region.
Lab21's Chinese distributor has also sent qualified technicians to the area to assist with instrument operation.
With Arsenic and Lead having become a significant problem in the newly formed quake lakes, the PDV6000plus will provide real time data, allowing the local authorities to implement instant decisions to protect the local population from consuming polluted drinking water.
The PDV6000plus instrument measures a variety of heavy metals in water and contaminated land applications including; cadmium, lead, copper, arsenic, zinc, chromium, mercury and nickel.
Chris Welsh, Lab21 Environmental Managing director said: "We are very pleased to be able to assist the Chinese government at this time.
"This situation clearly demonstrates the importance of monitoring heavy metals and how these portable instruments can be used to protect local the population from pollution."
