Oxoid has announced that Shazia Naz has been awarded the title of Oxoid Young Microbiologist of the Year 2007/2008.
Naz works within the marine fisheries department, part of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock, Karachi, Pakistan, which monitors fish processing and processing sites, as well as process water and ice at the landing areas.
She wins GBP1,000 and the opportunity to attend the 2009 International Association of Food Protection Meeting, to be held in Grapevine, Texas, USA.
Rebecca Moorhouse, laboratory technician at Young's Seafood, Grimsby, UK, was awarded the second prize of GBP500.
The judges also made additional highly commended awards to Habib Beenish, microbiologist at Dawn Bread, Karachi, Pakistan; Arsalan Saeed Zai, microbiologist and GMP coordinator at Cadbury Pakistan; and Ominda Florence Awino Ouma, laboratory analyst at Kenya Bureau of Standards, Kenya.
