The USDA Agricultural Research Service has commissioned Headwall Photonics to research and develop spectral-imaging instruments to improve food inspection and safety.
Dr Moon Kim, senior scientist at the USDA Agricultural Research Service, said: 'Our CRADA agreement with Headwall Photonics calls for the optimisation of spectral-imaging-based online inspection systems for a range of commercial applications.' Headwall's Hyperspec imaging sensors have already been deployed for in-line evaluation of poultry.
This requires exceptional spatial and spectral imaging performance on a processing line where 150 birds a minute are inspected.
The Hyperspec and Raman Explorer spectral imaging platforms provide the spectral capabilities to provide in-line processing for high-volume inspection of agricultural and food products.
Headwall's spectral imaging sensors can be tuned for the detection of different materials, additives or contaminants.
