The Royal Veterinary College has built The Centre for Emerging, Endemic and Exotic Diseases (CEEED) at its Hertfordshire campus, for the study of human and animal diseases.
CEEED features open-plan offices and high-security laboratories.
It will encourage research collaboration to tackle infectious diseases on a national and global scale.
CEEED will allow scientists, clinicians and laboratory scientists to work together to tackle diseases such as tuberculosis, MRSA and avian influenza.
Research conducted in the new CEEED building will contribute to the prevention, management and eradication of infectious diseases affecting animal and human health.
Researchers at CEEED will focus on the characteristics, behaviour and management of complex infectious disease systems by combining expertise in a range of disciplines, including epidemiology, immunology, microbiology, welfare and economics.
CEEED also provides training facilities for the RVC's undergraduate and postgraduate students.
New knowledge generated at the centre will be used to inform programme development and teaching.
The laboratory and office space are also available for research partners and visiting scientists, while the seminar room, equipped with teleconferencing facilities, supports collaboration and exchange with scientists outside the RVC.
The East of England Development Agency and the Higher Education Funding Council funded the centre.
