Rick Johnston of Bio-G (Bioproduction Group) featured at the 2009 Bioinnovation Leaders Summit from 8-9 June 2009 in London to present Bio-G's advanced toolsets for operational excellence.
Johnston addressed the attendees on 8 June and presented case studies and identifying key areas for performance improvement.
During the talk, some of the key 'unanswered' questions in biopharmaceutical manufacturing were highlighted, with a focus on variability as a key common theme across the entire industry.
Johnston underlined that variability is seen throughout the entire supply chain - from individual manufacturing unit operations to highly aggregated yearly demand estimates.
'We show how accurate modelling of the effects of this variability is of vital importance in manufacturing, comparing the cost of getting it wrong across a number of different metrics,' he said.
Case studies were presented showing how variability can be managed; the effect of accurate plant modelling (incorporating variability) on making better decisions and how dealing with this issue will result in immediate cost savings to customers.
Bio-G's toolset drew interest from its ability to give quantitative analysis of bottlenecks and target-set areas of improvement.
