Medichem International has launched the Airgene high-level airborne disinfectant.
Airgene is designed to rapidly decontaminate inaccessible areas in closed, high-risk environments, such as operating rooms and ambulances.
Applied as an aerosol, the total-discharge container allows rooms measuring up to 150m3 to be quickly treated against viruses, fungi, bacteria and mycobacteria.
According to the company, the disinfectant is safe for people and materials.
Airgene joins Medichem's range of high-level medical disinfection products, which includes its Trigene Advance and Perascope series.
Using an advanced micro-emulsion technology to carry the active molecules through the cell walls of pathogens, Trigene Advance works quicker than conventional disinfectants and kills cells rather than simply suspending cell activity.
'As well as its broad spectrum of efficacy, including HIV, Hepatitis B, the influenza virus and TB, Trigene is safe to use on steel, rubber and plastics as well as instruments and devices,' said Rick Hayman, the company's managing director.
Staying away from detrimental oxidising compounds, Medichem products can be used throughout the hospital environment, from the pharmacy and day-care departments through to radiology, operating theatres and endoscopy.
Hayman added: 'Specialist areas, such as endoscopy, require a scientifically developed product rather than a one-size-fits-all solution.
'Perascope Multi Shot sterilising solution, for example, is designed for heat labile endoscopes and can be used with wide range of reprocessor machines,' he said.
Using a peracetic-acid chemistry, Perascope is effective against spores, mycobacteria, viruses, fungi and bacteria within two minutes.
The solution is effective for seven days or 70 cycles.
It biodegrades to water and oxygen, allowing it to be disposed of safely.
