The YSI Life Sciences 2950 analyser is used to help fight cancer.
Many bioprocessing companies in the UK are currently working on drug development and drug commercialisation.
YSI Life Sciences is fortunate enough that one such company uses the YSI 2950 Analyser for its vital research into the use of modified viruses for attacking cancer cells without harming healthy tissue.
The chemistries Glucose, Lactate, Glutamine and Ammonium are measured for this particular project.
For several years researchers have been developing modified viruses that specifically target tumours, but there have been a number of challenges to overcome, including preventing the body’s immune system from destroying them before reaching the tumour.
Polymer coatings have been experimented with to protect the virus and one of the latest technologies currently being researched is the injection of micro-bubbles into the bloodstream, which burst when exposed to targeted ultrasound waves and propel the virus to the tumour.
The YSI 2900 Series is popular in cell-culture labs, as it accurately and rapidly measures the source nutrient in less than one minute and allows the user to replenish to the desired level.
Meanwhile, with the recent release of the 2900M Online Monitoring & Control system, this can be programmed to be carried out automatically and aseptically - lines are flushed with antiseptic after each sample is drawn.
