The 2950 Analyser from YSI Life Sciences is being used by scientists researching pancreatic cancer.
Despite current treatment achieving significant tumour shrinkage, some tumour cells survive the process and the YSI 2950 was used to measure glucose uptake and lactate production in the metabolic analysis of these cells.
A controlled number of surviving cells were plated in triplicate in a 96-well plate in 200 ml of complete stem cell medium.
After 24 hours, the medium was collected and glucose and lactate concentrations were evaluated by the YSI analyser, using unconditioned fresh medium as a reference.
The research demonstrated that the surviving cells, which are responsible for tumour recurrence, depend on oxidative phosphorylation for survival and show high sensitivity to oxidative phosphorylation inhibitors.
The YSI 2950 is used frequently in the field of cancer research. It gives rapid, accurate measurement of up to six analytes, depending upon the number of modules selected.
As well as glucose and lactate there is an extensive list of other chemistries including glutamate and glutamine. The analyser is easy to use with touch screen controls, flexible sampling (including 96-well plate) and connectivity.
