Anton Paar has launched an update for the SCO 1 salinometer to measure salt in crude oil. The measurement is based on the conductivity of a salt present in crude oil, when subjected to an alternating current.
As the instrument has been thoroughly redesigned, it is now not possible for the operator to come into contact with the electrodes during testing.
The new design has the sample jar securely held in place, reducing the risk of spillage.
To initiate a test, two keys have to be pressed, thereby reducing the risk of the operator coming into contact with high voltages.
What’s more, the instrument automatically switches off if currents above 20mA occur.
According to Anton Paar, knowledge of the chloride concentration is important as it is a major cause of corrosion during the refining process. The SCO 1 is used to assess desalting requirements for incoming crude oil and provides information on the efficiency of the desalting process.
