With the first anniversary of its launch still to come, Don Whitley Scientific's Macsmics automated system for delivering accurate gas mixtures for growth of microaerophilic organisms is already generating significant savings for laboratories big and small, says the company.
The latest addition to the Macs range of workstations, the Macsmics provides a far more economical alternative to the traditionally used gas pack, currently priced at around œ1 per sachet for a 3.5 litre jar.
By comparison, the DWS nine-plate jar uses 1.5 litres of gas on microaerophilic cycles at a cost of 2.4 pence, and 6 litres of gas on anaerobic cycles at only 9.6 pence.
These savings go a long way towards helping those customers with no capital budget to pay for the Macsmics on a monthly basis over a five-year period.
Flexibility is yet another key to the success of a system that allows good growth of microaerophiles and anaerobes from a premixed cylinder of anaerobic gas either on a stand-alone basis or attached to an anaerobic workstation.
The same excellent results can also be achieved by linking the Macsmics to a workstation running on three separate gases.
Several accessories are available to meet specific customer requirements.
A regulator, reducer and press-to-lock fitting enable the system to be run directly from a cylinder of mixed gas.
For laboratories wishing to operate the Macsmics on the same single cylinder of anaerobic gas mixture as their anaerobic workstation, a gas line tee piece, complete with fittings, can also be supplied.
