Temperature transmitters meet demanding requirements of UK's National Physical Laboratory
Emerson Process Management and its distributor, WE Instrumentation, have supplied Rosemount temperature transmitters to maintain the environmental temperature in the new, purpose-built National Physical Laboratory (NPL) located in Teddington.
NPL is the United Kingdom's national standards laboratory that develops and maintains the nation's primary measurement standards.
The NPL role of ensuring accuracy, consistency, and innovation in physical measurement, makes it vitally important that temperature within the laboratories is precisely controlled, to ensure NPL measurements are consistent and that experiments are repeatable.
The unique and demanding application necessitated a temperature solution that could provide the high environmental stability required.
Initial specifications drawn up by engineering contractor, Laser, asked for temperature control of plus or minus 0.5C.
The Emerson solution consisted of Rosemount resistance thermometer probes, which were suspended 600mm below the ceiling, connected to transmitters housed above the ceiling.
This arrangement was proved to offer an accuracy of plus or minus 0.2C.
"The high accuracy of the solution, plus Emerson support and responsiveness enabled us to apply and deliver the complete temperature monitoring solution in less than three months" said Malcolm Wyer, the UK sales manager for WE Instrumentation, the Emerson distributor.
"We are pleased to have met the unique application and delivery requirements of NPL."
