Genevac has announced the sale of its 1000th Cole principle vacuum pump to a customer in Germany
Now considered by many to be an industry standard for applications in centrifugal evaporation, rotary evaporation, vacuum ovens, freeze drying and distillation apparatus, the Cole vacuum pump finds wide use in chemical, pharmaceutical and biological applications.
Based upon the unique and patented Cole principle, the pump uses a high velocity stream of fluid in a rotating drum, passing over a stationary wing-shaped foil to create a vacuum cavity at the top of the leading edge.
A slot on the foil allows a stream of gas or vapour bubbles to be drawn into the fluid and spiral into the central exhaust zone under centripetal force.
This effluent then passes through an inert silicone fluid in the pump towards the central rotating axis to be drawn through the vacuum port for condensing and safe disposal.
Cole vacuum pumps are built to withstand acid, alkali, organic solvent and water vapours in normal use without the need for cold or chemical traps.
Cole vacuum pumps will consistently reach pressures below 0.5mbar enabling evaporation of even high boiling solvents such as DMSO and NMP.
The pump requires little maintenance, save regular topping up with inexpensive silicone fluid to maintain continuous high performance pumping of vapours.
