Presentation at the British Association Festival of Science in Leicester says agricultural research policy must strike a balance between production and the environment
Professor Alastair Robertson of the Institute of Food Research today (Friday) told the British Association Festival of Science of the need for an agricultural research policy that strikes a balance between production and environmental sustainability. "It is essential that we don't lose sight of the fact that agriculture is a fundamental part of food supply and delivery," said Professor Robertson.
"Future developments in agriculture should not be undertaken without an awareness, and full consideration of, their implications on food quality, safety and nutrition".
Professor Robertson went on to discuss the health and safety concerns surrounding food. "Obesity affects 1 in 5 adults in England, and there is a whole host of other dietary related diseases which are either totally preventable or can be mitigated against through good diet and nutrition", he said.
While supporting the Curry Commission's recommendation for a Research Priorities Board, Professor Robertson stressed the need for it to operate at the highest level and bridge government departments and agencies.
