Spinal injuries unit finds new surgical scope helps handle an increase in patient numbers safely and efficiently
A new Leica MS2 surgical microscope in the spinal injuries unit is helping surgeons at the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield to handle an increase in patient numbers safely and efficiently. David Douglas, consultant orthopaedic and spinal surgeon in Sheffield, explained: "Surgical microscopes improve visibility for working on nerves and blood vessels.
We can seal blood vessels and therefore stop bleeding quicker, which in turn gives us a better view.
The size of the incision can be made much smaller and overall the procedure is safer and the patient recovers faster.
The microscope's two eyepieces mean that the surgeon and assistant can both see clearly at the same time without bumping heads." "We bought a Leica MS1 three years ago for the main operating theatre, but expanding numbers of orthopaedic patients meant we really needed another microscope for the spinal injuries unit.
I looked around at other manufacturers but found that this new MS2 from Leica is even better than the first model.
It is so easy to use and move around, and the graphics on the VDU are excellent - absolutely superb for teaching purposes but also good for the whole team to be able to see what's going on.
