Southampton University chose its Golden Jubilee year to host its first Summer Science Exhibition, which aimed to demonstrate to the general public how much fun science can be
A thousand people, including schoolchildren from all over Hampshire, attended the hugely enjoyable exhibition held in the School of Biological Sciences.
Matt Cuttle from the School of Biological Sciences, explained: "The exhibition was a great success.
We set up six educational microscopes on loan from Leica Microsystems for visitors to look at different specimens, including plants, parasitic worms and even brain cells.
There was a quiz to try to identify as many specimens as possible, but I was standing nearby to whisper the answers if anyone had a problem! Students entered a competition to draw one of the samples in an artistic rather than scientific way, and Leica kindly donated a £50 prize to the artist with the best picture." The Summer Science Exhibition looks set to become an annual event in Southampton, and Matt concluded: "It was such a fantastic success we're already talking about how to make it even better next year."
