Sira Test and Certification has been awarded the contract to evaluate the performance of clamp-on transit time ultrasonic time-of-flight flow meters by the National Measurement System Policy Unit (NMSPU), which is part of the DTI.
The purpose of the project, which forms part of the National Measurement System Flow Programme, is to investigate the performance of clamp-on transit time ultrasonic flowmeters (CTTUFs) under a range of specific conditions.
The findings will complement the existing knowledge base and enhance the opportunities for industry to utilise the technology more widely for traceable measurements.
The programme will build on previous work already completed by other recognised UK flow facilities.
Sira will be managing the project in partnership with WRc, which will bring considerable industrial water metering expertise into the project to supplement Sira's hydrocarbon metering expertise.
The impact of the project will be a greater understanding of the application-related factors that affect performance of CTTUFs, to enable users to make informed choices when deciding on the appropriate metering technology.
Depending on the findings, a potential increase in user confidence for this convenient metering technology enabling greater flexibility and increased cost-effectiveness in flow monitoring throughout industry.
The knowledge gained may allow the introduction of true calibration certificates, in compliance with the requirements of ISO 17025, rather than the current 'certificates of test' and to consequently deliver valid traceability.

A knowledge transfer group is being set up as part of the project.
The group, which is open to all interested parties, will have the opportunity to comment on the proposed work programme and the guidance documentation as well as receiving regular updates on the progress of the project.
Guidance material will be developed as a result of the project that will enable users to make informed choices when deciding on appropriate metering technology and whether or not CTTUFs are suitable for their application.
