GeneGnome scientific imaging system wins a European Information Society Technologies (IST) prize for its outstanding combination of innovative design and sophisticated IT
The GeneGnome was chosen out of 294 applicants from 26 countries by a Euro-Case nominated panel of IT experts in 16 European countries and is the only product from a UK-based company to be so honoured.
The prize will be awarded at a ceremony, taking place in December 2001 during the European IST conference in Dusseldorf, one of the largest European gatherings of international IT experts.
GeneGnome is the first of a new kind of automated imaging system that is faster and offers greater convenience than using photographic film.
It uses a highly sensitive electronic CCD camera to capture images and sophisticated software algorithms to analyse those images. GeneGnome is allowing scientists world-wide to study proteins stained with chemiluminescent dye and is ultimately helping to develop new drugs, prevent crop disease and carry out essential research.
Paul Ellwood, Syngene's divisional manager said: "We are delighted to have been selected for such a major European award.
Automating the processes needed to capture and analyse often very irregular and distorted protein patterns is in itself a considerable achievement, so to have the GeneGnome technology recognised by independent IT experts is a great testimony to its excellence."
