The loss-on-drying (LOD) technique is a method of accurately measuring the water content of a solid or liquid by weighing the sample before and after drying. One of the most effective ways of doing this is to use a moisture determination balance.
These instruments come with an in-built drying mechanism that permits a sample’s initial weight to be measured and, after closure of a lid, to be measured while the sample is being dried. When the weight is consistent and the test therefore completed the moisture/solid content of the initial sample can be calculated.
