‘This is not a time for fear’, says new IChemE president John McGagh
10 May 2017
John McGagh, who is currently chief digital officer at Australian power company Snowy Hydro, has been named as president of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE).
McGagh’s presidential address – ‘Chemical Engineers: Thriving in an Exponential World’ – was made at the International Convention Centre in Birmingham and streamed live on Facebook.
In it he cited examples of how cognitive computing skills were being used in a range of innovative ways to revolutionise the management and operation of offshore platforms, including at Australian oil and gas company Woodside.
He also said collaboration between professionals that utilise digital capabilities would help advance chemical engineering on a global scale.
McGagh said: “IChemE has a vital role to play in helping its members, and its stakeholders in industry, academia, research and in the regulatory sphere to seize the moment and take full advantage of the exponential world that we are living in.
“This is not a time of fear. This is a time of opportunity. And there is much work to be done.”
Ken Rivers, formerly the CEO of Refining NZ, was announced as deputy president and will succeed McGagh in May 2018.
