CelVivo's patented BioArray Matrix (BAM) bioreactor 3D cell culture system has received CE approval.
The clinostat microgravity BAM system uses precision control of rotation to create uniformly-sized spheroid populations in suspension. The specially designed, patented bioreactors can be repetitively opened like a petri dish to collect samples or “biopsies”.
3D cultures recover functionality seen in vivo. The new BioArray Matrix (BAM) from CelVivo can grow non-vascularized spheroids up to 1mm in diameter without necrosis. They mimic tissue physiology and reach a metabolic equilibrium sustainable for at least a month. Hollow organoids have been cultivated for up to a year.
The specially designed, patented bioreactors provide an ultra-low shear force environment. They can be repetitively opened like a petri dish to collect samples or “biopsies”, and then closed so the spheroids can continue to grow essentially undisturbed. The biomass (DNA and protein content) of each bioreactor or spheroid can be accurately estimated with a simple, non-invasive method, allowing easy assay normalization.
Spheroids or organoids can be built from almost all types of cells or cell mixtures, including primary cells, stem cells, and immortal cell lines. ECM or scaffold materials can be used, but are not necessary.
The company claims there is no other 3D culture technology that offers all of these advantages in one easy-to-use system.
