The Scientific Laboratory Show and Conference is returning to the East Midlands Conference Centre at the University of Nottingham on 23 May.
Organised by Scientific Laboratory Supplies (SLS), the free-to-attend event aims to build on the success of previous shows. It will bring together scientists, speakers and exhibitors from across the community, offering an opportunity to meet like-minded people, learn new things and discover the very best scientific technology and equipment for the laboratory.
Alongside the show, SLS is working with the Science Council once more to office a range of talks, seminars, workshops, masterclasses and demonstrations, some of which count towards CPD.
This year’s keynote speakers are Professor Sir Bill Wakeham, Dallas Campbell – who will also be acting as MC for the event – and marine biologist turned wildlife cameraman Doug Allan. Professor Wakeham’s broad background across chemistry, engineering and physics gives him unique insight, which he will be using to look at some of the latest practical applications of scientific theory in industrial settings. With more than 30 years of experience behind the camera, Doug will be discussing the symbiotic partnership between scientific research and film making, whether its satellite tracking orcas, measuring the precise shape of icebergs or determining the impact of climate change on polar bears. Dallas will also be exploring the interaction – or lack of separation – between science and culture from the perspective of a self-professed ‘non-scientist’, as well as sharing his passion for space travel.
In addition to the varied conference schedule, delegates can take advantage of the Science Council’s Professional Development Zone (PDZ), and engage with relevant bodies, including the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Royal Society of Biology, the Biochemical Society, the Institute of Physics, the Institute of Science and Technology, and the Institute of Biomedical Science.
This year’s show will bring together more than 60 exhibitors from across the SLS supply chain, with a number choosing to launch new products. The exhibitors represent the breadth of the scientific community, from food safety and pharmaceuticals to healthcare and water analysis. Event sponsor Corning will be displaying a selection of products from each of its brands – Corning, Falcon and Axygen – with the recently-launched Corning Cell Counter taking centre stage. Eppendorf, another main sponsor, will be showcasing its Cryocube F740hi – a freezer for secure storage and optimised energy use – and its epMotion 96, a semi-automated electronic pipette for fast and precise parallel 96-channel microplate processing.
