Olympus America has announced an asset purchase agreement with New York/New Jersey Scientific, a distributor and value added reseller of scientific instrumentation and systems based in Middlebush, NJ
Effective 1 November 2006, Olympus will directly service NY/NJ Scientific's sales territory in both states.
Olympus will be selling microscopes, imaging systems and other products for research and clinical applications throughout the region with an enhanced sales force, to include existing sales staff of NY/NJ Scientific.
"This is a key region for Olympus's scientific equipment group, thanks to the area's large number of universities, research facilities, clinical laboratories and pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies" said Stephen Tang, group vice president and general manager for life science at Olympus America.
"This deal is part of a strategy that will help further build our strength in every region of the country.
"Olympus offers a combination of direct and dealer sales, depending on the region, to ensure that we can provide the best knowledge, products and service to microscope users across the USA".
NY/NJ Scientific's founder Yatsuhiro (Andy)Sekine initiated the idea of the arrangement as he began planning for retirement.
"I began my career in the USA as an Olympus employee, and have spent my entire life working with the company.
"I wanted to be sure that we provided the best continuity for our customers and organisation, so I approached Olympus with the idea of taking over our operation when I retire, to benefit our staff and clients and provide a seamless transition".
Existing NY/NJ Scientific customers will continue to work with their current sales representatives, using their customary contact information for the foreseeable future.
The staff will be based at the Olympus headquarters in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania, with direct sales representatives spread throughout the region.
