The latest issue of the Energy Spiegel (no 17) from scientists at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Switzerland provides background information for decision makers
The current economic boom in China is accompanied by major environmental problems.
The worst damage is due to air pollution from burning coal, China's number one energy source.
PSI and its research partners searched for ways to reduce these emissions - through the China Energy Technology Programme (CETP), China's energy future can be designed to be more sustainable.
The results of the CETP show that the necessary investments will repay themselves many times over.
And reducing regional air pollution by replacing coal power plants with gas plants, nuclear energy and renewable energy systems will also reduce CO2 emissions - which is important for the world as a whole.
