A company launched in 2005 to provide a rapid diagnostic reporting service for histopathology and cytology is seeing its workload grow month on month
Backlogs online reporting service is being used increasingly by hospital pathology departments as a cost-effective alternative to locum recruitment - providing short term holiday cover or longer term support as required.
Backlogs also undertakes expert review and duty of care work.
The company has reported more than 21,500 cases already this year and currently works with 28 NHS Trusts.
With its network of specialist consultant pathologists, secure online reporting, no binding contracts and flat fee per case, Backlogs offers a highly flexible and responsive service with rapid turnaround and no hidden costs.
Robin Moseley, a consultant pathologist from Cambridge and one of the founders of Backlogs, has direct experience of the challenges involved in managing laboratory workloads.
He explained how the Backlogs system works: "Using our service takes only a phone call.
"We then arrange for our medical couriers to collect the samples which are immediately assigned to appropriate specialists within our UK network of consultant pathologists.
"They in turn report cases directly online, making information available immediately to clients via our unique secure web-based system.
"With no binding contracts Backlogs services can be engaged or stopped with immediate effect, to respond directly to changing requirements," he continued, "and our 'flat-fee per case' tariff means that departments can budget confidently for our services."
