The Chemical Business Association has recently hosted a group of senior officials from the Hong Kong Labour Department.
The aim of the visit was to discuss the implementation of GHS (Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals) into Europe and its wider implications for the worldwide industry.
The visitors included highly qualified chemists and professionals experienced in chemical labelling and enforcement of dangerous substances regulations, who are currently members of the Hong Kong Labour Department's working group on the implementation of GHS.
Hong Kong is currently considering whether to adopt the GHS for chemical substances and is examining any legal or social issues that may arise as a result of its implementation.
As part of this overseas training exercise, the senior chemist and three occupational safety officers engaged in discussions with Peter Newport and Douglas Leech of CBA.
The talks covered aspects of the scope and process of development of the system, timescale and communication between government and industry stakeholders.
The delegation reported that they highly valued the opportunity to find out about the work of the CBA in helping its members with the understanding and implementation of the forthcoming GHS.
