Smart Solutions for HCAI has revealed that its NHS programme, which aims to find new products or technologies to fight healthcare-associated infections (HCAI) has attracted more than 200 applications.
Smart Solutions for HCAI has been seeking the most effective new solutions from across all industry sectors that are not currently in use, or have not been widely adopted, within the NHS.
With the deadline for applications now passed, the final count has exceeded the expectations of the project team.
While the project has been open to new ideas from the medical industry, it has also targeted sectors including aerospace, automotive, food and drink, engineering, pharmaceuticals and manufacturing.
Some of these sectors are highly regulated and have had to innovate to meet hygiene standards, while others have had to develop 'clean room' technologies to provide the right conditions for manufacturing and processing.
Applications are currently being assessed by the expert review panel, which includes some of the UK's leading specialists in HCAIs.
Products considered to have the greatest potential will then be evaluated in a hospital setting early next year.
More than 20 hospitals throughout the UK have so far agreed to take part.
Applications submitted have included everything from new cannula packs to novel biocides and UV emitters.
