The microbiology department at Darlington Memorial Hospital, UK is using a UF1000i system from BioMerieux for its urine testing procedures.
The instrument was installed in October 2008 and routine testing began in earnest in December.
Angie Williams, BMS2 at Darlington, said: 'The UF1000i's flow cytometry technology offers far greater sensitivity than microscopy by eye, standardising results and reducing the number of samples we culture.
'As we have become more familiar with the instrument, turnaround times have decreased dramatically, with negative urine results now being released within hours.
'More importantly, the UF1000i can be operated by MLAs, releasing valuable BMS time for other tasks in the laboratory.'
