Photonics & electronics centre to launch in UK

The University of Southampton is set to launch the Zepler Institute this Thursday, making it the UK’s largest photonics & electronic centre.
The multidisciplinary research centre is designed to bring together industry expertise within the fields of photonics, advanced materials, quantum technologies and nanoscience.
Director of the university’s Optoelectronics Research Centre, Professor Sir David Payne, will be leading research at the Zepler Institute and will deliver a lecture discussing 50 years of photonics at the university.

The institute will offer researchers a platform to further their research in areas such as ultra-high bandwidth communication technologies, bio-photonics and quantum devices and technologies.
Dean of Physical and Applied Sciences at the University of Southampton, Professor Dame Wendy Hall said: “The formation of the Zepler Institute ensures that University of Southampton continues to make pioneering breakthroughs and discoveries that will meet society’s global communication challenges. It also puts us in a leading position to develop the future of the World Wide Web.”
From 3pm on Thursday, researchers will be showcasing their latest work and introducing the new facilities.
As of 5pm, those wishing to attend can register for limited places or view the full lecture programme via the live stream.
