Usually found on more expensive instruments, EPPC adds another dimension to the control of separations by capillary gas chromatography, particularly when used in conjunction with temperature programming.
Mass flow controllers do not work well at the low flow rates used with capillary columns, and the simple pressure regulators or needle valves used in many other low cost instruments cannot compensate for the drop in flow rate that occurs as the column temperature increases during a temperature programme.
Using EPPC, the carrier gas pressure can be increased as the temperature rises to compensate for or even reverse this effect, cutting the elution time of strongly retained components and improving analytical sensitivity.
When EPPC is used with CSI's download software, it is possible to use the GC in "simulated constant flow" mode, where the system calculates the pressure programme necessary to produce constant carrier gas velocity throughout a temperature programmed run.
