Instron, a leading provider of testing equipment designed to evaluate mechanical properties of materials and components, has teamed up with Professor Tony Ryan, Head of Chemistry at Sheffield University, to present this year's Royal Institution of Great Britain Christmas lectures entitled "Smart Stuff." Professor Ryan used a 5500 Series materials testing system during two of the lectures, to compare the mechanical properties of spider silk versus man-made nylon fiber and analyze the adhesive properties of an office sticky note by performing a peel off test.
The first lecture will be broadcast on Channel 4, December 26, 2002 at 11:05 AM and the other on December 27, 2002 at 11:00 AM.
Each year since 1825, the Royal Institution has invited a member of the academic community to present a series of science lectures aimed at children ages 9-14.
This year the lectures focus on how science applies to everyday items such as mobile phones, food, transportation, etc Norman Smith, managing director of Instron Europe remarked, "We are thrilled to participate in the Royal Institution's flagship lecture series, and it is an honor to help maintain this tradition.
Instron is delighted to have one of its 5567 systems play a supporting role in helping children see how exciting science can be."
