Optically-based instrument provides real-time precision film thickness measurements of multi-layer specialty films for manufacturing process control
Lumetrics says it has successfully used its DI 330 Optigauge film thickness measurement system for on-line thickness measurement tests during the production of high-performance specialty film. The DI 330 system accurately tracked the thickness of a multi-layer film during production, instantaneously detecting increases and decreases in thickness due to changes in the manufacturing process.
These tests clearly demonstrate the benefits of the real-time thickness measurement provided by the DI 330 Optigauge system for the production of advanced specialty films.
The DI 330 Optigauge film thickness measurement system employs advanced optical technology originally developed by Eastman Kodak to monitor its polyester film operation for thickness uniformity.
Lumetrics enhanced this technology to meet the current requirements of advanced specialty film manufacturers.
The DI 330 Optigauge measures absolute thickness to the highest accuracy of +/-0.1 micrometers, a specification guaranteed by continuous calibration with a built-in reference standard.
Virtually any translucent multi-layer film or laminate can be sin detail because the thickness of every layer is measured simultaneously.
What's more, a measurement rate of 30 Hz makes the DI 330 Optigauge system ideal for the on-line inspection of a fast moving web.
"Advanced designs of specialty films have led to the need for better measurement tools to confirm critical parameters such as film thickness," said John Hart, president and CEO of Lumetrics.
"The DI 330 Optigauge film thickness measurement system is a revolutionary gauging instrument that provides quick and precise thickness measurement during manufacturing.
"Now, film manufacturers can monitor and improve their production processes to ensure product quality, reduce waste, and minimise product cost."
