Chinese researchers now have increased access to industry-leading technology and expertise thanks to a new collaboration between Oxford Instruments Superconductivity and Quantum Design.
Oxford Instruments Superconductivity will oversee sales and distribution for Quantum Design products in China from October this year.
This sales agreement will be followed by a service and installation agreement commencing as early as 1 January 2003.
The collaboration builds on a strategic alliance between the two companies to develop measurement systems for the materials characterisation market.
This includes Quantum Design's PPMS (physical properties measurement system) range, which gives researchers rapid results for a wide variety of measurements from a single instrument.
This is extremely important in areas such as nanotechnology, where basic research needs high-throughput, sensitive and rapid instrumentation.
Resulting data may be used to develop applications ranging from ultra-small sensors and power sources for space travel, to improved dielectric and other materials for the semiconductor industry.
Jerry Daviess, president, Quantum Design, commented: "This collaboration illustrates the commitment of both companies to our customers, giving them easier access not just to essential technology, but also backing it up with the expertise of our engineers and a comprehensive service programme." With offices in Beijing and Shanghai, Oxford Instruments Superconductivity already has a strong presence and an established distribution network in China. The company says it is well respected worldwide as a key player in the market and is seen as the partner of choice for many Chinese research institutes.
This meant that it was in an ideal position to help Quantum Design meet the needs of a rapidly growing marketplace.
Jim Hutchins, sales director at Oxford Instruments, explained, "Quantum Design has made a significant number of sales in China over the past year as its turnkey products are well suited to the needs of Chinese research scientists.
They are looking to build on this initial success using our established market position.
In addition to the financial rewards, the initial, two-year sales agreement cements the working relationship between the two companies even further." To support this new business opportunity, Oxford Instruments Superconductivity has recruited a dedicated sales engineer and service engineer in China.
Prior to taking on the new distribution opportunity, the new staff will undertake extensive product training at Quantum Design's headquarters in San Diego.
