Some biomedical scientists and cytoscreeners had experienced discomfort when manipulating microscope controls, a condition known as 'pinch and roll'
The ErgoScan system from Prior Scientific is an ergonomic motorised stage system, which enhances microscope ergonomics by motorising the stage and focus controls.
ErgoScan has been designed for routine screening applications where microscope ergonomics are a significant concern.
A joystick is used to move the stage, while a flathand roller controls the focus mechanism. The Cytopathology Department at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth, employs 12 microscopists and screens 32,000 gynaecological smears per annum, plus an additional 5000 non-gynaecological cases. Derriford decided that it wanted to improve the ergonomics of its existing microscopes used in the screening process and contacted Prior after seeing the ErgoScan system featured at a trade conference.
Some biomedical scientists and cytoscreeners had experienced discomfort when manipulating microscope controls. This condition is known as 'pinch and roll'.
It was anticipated that introducing an ergonomic solution to the screening process would minimise the discomfort experienced by the staff.
After evaluating the ErgoScan system the Cytopathology department decided to purchase a number of systems for its staff, allowing them to work more efficiently and comfortably.
Since originally ordering the systems three years ago, the department has ordered a number of additional systems for the staff.
The main benefit for the Cytopathology Department at Derriford of using the ErgoScan system is that it has enabled staff to continue with their work, enjoying improved ergonomics and reduced operator fatigue.
Amanda Milsom, BMS2 at Derriford, said of the hospital's decision to purchase the ErgoScan system: "Without the purchase of three complete ErgoScan units we could not have continued being employed as cytologists, resulting in a combined loss of 40 years experience from the department." The introduction of the ErgoScan system into the Cytopathology Department at Derriford has assisted with both productivity and throughput of the cases which can be screened, which in turn has improved efficiencies and performance within the Department.
