Rockwell Automation introduces the Allen-Bradley Pico Controller, a low cost controller designed for relay replacement applications.
Pico's size and versatility make it a perfect solution for the middle ground between intelligent relays and micro PLCs.
"The lines are hazy between miniature PLCs and smart relays," said Mark Daniels product manager, Rockwell Automation.
"Pico is much like a relay in terms of its compact design and low cost, but its functionality is more like a PLC".
Pico performs simple logic, timing, counting and real-time clock operations, and has optional memory modules for program storage and transport.
It is designed for ease of use and can be programmed without any special software.
All programming and data adjustments can be made using the built-in keypad and LCD display.
The Pico range comprises 12 I/O and 18 I/O versions suitable for 120/240V AC or 24V DC operation.
Relay outputs are rated at 8 Amps to drive a wide range of devices.
The DC-powered versions have two inputs that can be used either as DC digital inputs, or 0-10V analogue inputs.
All are suitable for DIN rail or panel mounting.
The 12-point Pico measures only 90 mm high x 71.5 mm wide x 53 mm deep and is capable of 164 instructions.
The 18-point controller has the same slim profile but is 108 mm wide and capable of 484 instructions.
The Allen-Bradley Pico controller is ideal for traditional OEMs that are still using relays for controls, but are looking to increase functionality and versatility.
Electrical contractors will also find the Pico controller an attractive option for automated applications, such as building and car park lighting control or ventilation and blower control.
