Scienion has been be awarded the Innovationspreis Berlin-Brandenburg 2004 for its Sciflexarrayer piezoelectric dispensing system
The annual prize is jointly awarded by the German federal states of Berlin and Brandenburg for product and process innovations and innovative technology services.
This year's prize money totalling up to 50,000 euro will be shared by three regional companies.
Holger Eickhoff, co-founder and CEO of Scienion, is extremely pleased to receive the award: "We are very proud of being honoured with the Innovationspreis for a second time. Sciflexarrayer allows the aspiration of ultra low level liquid volumes within the picoliter to nanoliter range from different reservoirs and contact-free micro drop delivery onto a variety of carriers.
The liquid handling is based on a piezoelectric inkjet principle.
This technique is said to be far superior to conventional techniques and will increasingly replace the latter in modern labs.
The Sciflexarrayer is a highly flexible and precise robotic system enabling more reproducible results, a higher degree of parallelisation and miniaturisation and hence savings in both time and cost for the customer.
The range of applications include DNA and protein chip technology, high throughput screening, production of cell transfection assays, sample preparation for Maldi mass spectrometry, and the production of screening arrays loaded with chemicals and active agents.
In 2000, Scienion was awarded with the Innovationspreis Berlin-Brandenburg for its innovative chip technology which relies on a novel surface coating of microarrays allowing the creation of nearly wall-less reaction chambers.
