Will allow microbiologists to automatically count any type of colony and could help identify potentially life-threatening microbial contamination quickly and conveniently
Synbiosis, a manufacturer of automated microbiological solutions, has introduced a 3M Petrifilm plate holder for use with its ProtoCol automated colony counter.
This will allow microbiologists to automatically count any type of colony grown on Petrifilm and could help identify potentially life-threatening microbial contamination quickly and conveniently.
The plate holder has been specifically designed to provide the correct magnification of colonies grown on Petrifilm and is simple to integrate into the ProtoCol system.
Since Petrifilm plates are quality controlled pre-prepared films coated with nutrients and gelling agents, they offer greater consistency than conventional agar.
The combination of using the ProtoCol with Petrifilm plates will save time and improve accuracy, when performing testing for harmful bacteria such as coliforms, Enterobacteriaceae and Staphylococcus aureus.
This, will in turn, enhance efficiency and reduce laboratory costs.
Simon Johns, international product manager for Synbiosis, explained: "The new Petrifilm holder was developed after many months of consultation with internationally renowned microbiologists.
We are delighted that the resulting holder performs so perfectly with the ProtoCol system.
This simple device promises to allow all Petrifilm users in critical areas such as food testing or environmental monitoring faster, more accurate colony counting.
The benefits of combining Petrifilm plates with the ProtoCol are inestimable. Since these systems have the potential to quickly alert microbiologists to a serious outbreak of bacterial contamination, they may save critical hours and therefore, lives."
