PerkinElmer will become the exclusive distributor of Waters Quattro micro and Quattro Premier tandem quadrupole mass spectrometers and Alliance HPLC system for neonatal screening applications
Waters has entered into a long-term collaboration with PerkinElmer to deliver and support advanced newborn screening systems.
The packages combine Waters's mass spectrometry (MS) and liquid chromatography (LC) instrumentation and control software, with PerkinElmer's proprietary chemistries, proven methodologies, and laboratory information management software.
PerkinElmer will become the exclusive distributor of Waters Quattro micro and Quattro Premier tandem quadrupole mass spectrometers and Alliance HPLC system for neonatal screening applications.
PerkinElmer will market the co-branded products to clinical laboratories and supply them with the consumables - standards, controls, and reagents - as an all-in-one, fully-supported solution for newborn screening applications.
Newborn screening for metabolic disorders has become one of the most widely accepted procedures in preventative pediatrics.
From a single blood sample taken at birth, disease markers for as many as 40 metabolic diseases can be detected.
Early detection increases treatment and management options and has saved the lives and prevented neurological damage in thousands of infants with inherited metabolic disorders.
Waters and PerkinElmer are collaborating on the installation and support of a tandem mass spectrometry-based platform in California as part of that state's expanded newborn screening program.
"This announcement is an important milestone for our clinical business.
"It is an acknowledgment by PerkinElmer of both the technical excellence of our products and the strength of our expertise in clinical applications for LC MS/MS," said Mike Yelle, senior director of clinical business operations at Waters.
"This partnership with PerkinElmer will help speed the development and release of products to enable early intervention and treatment, which will improve the health of newborns, lower healthcare costs, and save lives," Yelle added.
"With PerkinElmer's broad knowledge and experience in the field of newborn screening, especially in the development and manufacture of reagents and application software, we couldn't have picked a better partner to team with".
"We are pleased to collaborate with Waters on its mass spectrometry technologies in our integrated systems for newborn screening," said Peter Coggins, president of PerkinElmer Life and Analytical Sciences.
"Through this agreement, our mutual goal is to ensure a pipeline of advanced and integrated products that protect the health of newborns".
Waters brand products that are a part of the instrument configurations offered by PerkinElmer include the Micromass Quattro micro and Quattro Premier mass spectrometers, MassLynx software, NeoLynx Application Manager software, Alliance 2795XE separations module, 2777C sample manager, and 1525micro binary HPLC pump for sample injection.
In April 2005, Waters announced a broad initiative to provide analytical technologies aimed at clinical research applications to respond to the growing and complex needs of this demanding market.
Marketed under the MassTrak Clinical brand, Waters products monitor and measure drug therapies, perform toxicology screening and confirm and quantify biomarkers quickly, reliably and accurately, it says.
