Netherlands Forensic Institute laboratory has established automated processing of samples from 'high volume' crimes, as well as manual processing of samples with only minimal traces of DNA
Scientists at the Netherlands Forensic Institute are using the Applied Biosystems AmpFLSTR Profiler PCR amplification kits and AmpFLSTR Profiler Plus ID PCR amplification kits to analyse evidence collected from almost every crime scene in the country.
The Institute's DNA laboratory has established automated processing of cigarette butts, chewing gum, blood, and saliva samples from 'high volume' crimes, such as theft, as well as manual processing of samples with only minimal traces of DNA from violent crimes.
"We manually amplify the DNA using the AmpFLSTR Profiler human identification kits before sequencing with an ABI Prism 3100 genetic analyser.
"The raw data are analysed and transferred either to reporting scientists or to the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) group for the Netherlands' National DNA database.
"Applied Biosystems's kits and equipment have been properly validated and tested for forensic purposes and are used more or less as standard in all forensic casework" said Wiljo de Leeuw, director of the DNA Laboratory.
