Delp and Associates, manufacturer of the Delp Mixer, has made a donation of laboratory mixing equipment valued at over US$5000 to Urbana University, USA.
Joining the company in this donation is Ace Glass, manufacturer of laboratory glassware, which contributed glassware and accessories, valued at approximately US$1000.
The donated equipment will be used in the chemistry department as a teaching aid, and will enhance the capabilities of the academic laboratory and increase the learning opportunities for students.
Elizabeth Paul, professor, division of math and science, was on hand to receive the mixing system, which includes a Delp model 216S mixer and Ace Glass 500ml glass reactor.
This is the first academic package to be released.
The teaching system will allow students to safely perform and observe reactions in vacuum or pressure environments.
The new system will receive its first trials as Becky Somers, chemistry major and senior 2006, uses it for her thesis work.
Why donate to Urbana University, a small liberal arts school, instead of a larger, more widely known school like Ohio State University when both are located in central Ohio, near the home offices of Delp and Associates?.
"Small schools like small businesses are critical to the education and economy of our nation and both need support," says Terrence Delp, chief designer and vice president of Delp and Associates.
Delp, an Urbana alumnus, believes that small schools give students a solid foundation on which to build when they advance to larger schools and more advanced educational programs.
Delp went on to credit his own success with the quality instruction and appreciation for values that he received while attending Urbana in the 1970s.
The company does not anticipate making additional donations of this type in the near future, but has established a special programme that will allow other business owners to purchase similar systems at a discounted price.
They also hope to encourage other small businesses interested in supporting education in their own industries to adopt similar programs.
Based in Columbus, Ohio, Delp and Associates provides mechanical systems to science and industry and produces its signature line of laboratory mixing devices, the Delp Mixer, for the polymer, pharmaceutical and life science industries.
