It is controlled by a standard laptop computer, and runs from a rechargeable battery pack, or even a car cigarette lighter socket.

It can provide visual images of trace evidence at crime scenes, perform narcotics testing, screen hazardous waste, chemical spills and environmental contamination, and certify incoming raw materials and outgoing products at the warehouse. The TravelIR has a diamond ATR sample stage for analysing solids, powders, liquids and pastes, with an integral video microscope to ensure correct positioning of micro-samples.
QualID, a very simple software interface, allows non-specialist operators to produce accurate verifiable results with minimal training, while PerkinElmer's Spectrum software offers more detailed analysis.
